Now they're telling us not to eat jalapenos...

Thanks to my colleague Tony, here's the latest from FDA:

1. The distribution center's name in McAllen, Texas is Agricola Zaragosa. Contaminated jalapeno pepper grown in Mexico. The firm has initiated a recall of the product. Retailers will not be listed on FDA recall press release that sold peppers from this distribution facility.

2. There were no other positive results from any other product in the distribution center or from environmental sampling in the facility. This is very small distribution company according to FDA. This facility also processes tomatillos.

3. FDA advising consumers not to eat fresh jalapenos or other products made with fresh jalapenos. Consumers who are immuno-compromised advised not to eat serrano peppers as well

4. Restaurants are being advised not to serve fresh jalapenos

5. The recall of jalapeno and avocadoes involving Grande Produce in Hidalgo, TX are not part of this investigation -- they were tainted with a different strain of salmonella. There products were also imported from Mexico

6. Investigation still going on in Mexico involving a particular packer

7. CNN reporter Louise Schiavone asked why is FDA advising consumers not to eat jalapeno peppers from growers on the east coast that are currently being harvested. FDA responded that in the interest of public health, the advisory is for all jalapeno peppers until further notice.

FYI, this is absolutely wack --- FDA is flying by the seat of their pants --- wasting lots of food and money!
