Notes from the FDA/CDC press briefing today:
All tomatoes currently in domestic market have now been cleared for consumption, regardless of type or where they were grown -- domestic or foreign. Nothing has turned up in any points of distribution chain that has indicated contamination. But they are still saying that tomatoes may have caused outbreak. FDA said that they found no problems with the Florida farms.
Cross contamination could have occurred. (This happens when different commodities occupy the same space...)
Consumer advisory for at risk populations on the consumption of jalapenos and serrano peppers remains in effect.
One Mexican packer has drawn interest -- they pack different types of peppers. FDA is sending investigators there.
CDC reports that the number of reported illnesses is up to 1220, with 224 hospitalizations. Last reported illness occurred on July 4. CDC says the the numbers of reported illnesses are starting to decline as each day goes by. CDC is going to post a chart on its website showing the number of daily reported illnesses during the course of the outbreak.
